Can they get in and out of bed safely?
A hospital bed raises the head and the foot, so getting out starts from sitting up rather than lying flat. Rails matter more than most families expect: they are something solid to hold while turning and sitting up. If the bedroom is upstairs and the stairs are the problem, a bed downstairs in the living room is a normal answer, not a defeat.
Is this where the next fall happens?
It usually is. Wet tile, a low toilet and nothing to hold. A raised seat, a shower chair and grab bars fixed into studs solve most of it, and they cost very little compared to a second hospital stay.
How far can they walk, honestly?
Not how far they say. A rollator with a seat lets someone stop and rest, which often means they keep walking at all. A wheelchair for longer distances is not giving up; it is how people keep going to appointments and to church.
Can they actually get into the house?
Steps at the entrance are the thing families forget until the car is in the driveway. Measure the rise before discharge day, and call us with the number. It changes what equipment makes sense.
