Will Medicare pay for a fully electric hospital bed?
It depends on your plan and on what your physician documents, so we check your policy before you commit to either bed. What actually separates the two beds we rent is the head end: on the fully electric bed it runs off the hand control, on the semi-electric it is raised with a crank.
Both beds raise the head and the foot, and both sit at the same fixed height; neither has a powered height adjustment. On the semi-electric the foot runs off the hand control and the head is cranked. On the fully electric both ends are on the hand control, so whoever is in the bed can raise their own head instead of waiting for someone to crank it.
Plans separate what is documented as medically necessary from what they treat as an upgrade, and they do not all draw that line in the same place. We bill Medicare, Cigna and Curative, and their rules are not identical. Rather than tell you where the line sits in general, we look at where it sits on your policy.
If the fully electric bed is not authorized, there are two real options and neither is a failure. The semi-electric raises the head and foot too, with a crank at the head end. Or you self-pay the difference, which plenty of families do for a recovery with an end date. Both rates are published, so you can weigh it with actual numbers rather than a guess.
Whichever way it goes, we verify the coverage and give you your cost in writing before anything is delivered.
